ABOUT THE ART PIECE

The title, “Come, Child” stems from Melissa's belief in Christ.

Chrysanthemum, the flower that represent death. As humans, it is something we come to fear, due to its negative connotation to the ideology of death. The symbolism of offering this flower to the dead, all while decorating the halls with it.

The great purple emperor, the butterfly that feeds on the dead. It represents an encouraging symbolism, where something as beautiful as a butterfly would be associated with death itself. It shows the act of facing this ugly truth that death brings, the negative emotions brought upon oneself, disbelief and at that point, running away seems like the only plausible option. Yet, it doesn’t heal us. Healing only happens when we allow others to come in.

However no one have to face this fear alone. Similarly, Samantha has went through a process of loss recently. However fear and sadness only happen momentarily, as she felt love and support through the people around her. This would thus represent the hands in the artwork that is positioned in a hugging manner. Most of the time, an embrace is all we need. She felt that through her community and His presence.
